Happy Independence Day

Selamat menyambut hari kebangsaan / merdeka!

Malaysia is an independent sovereign. Keep it that way. Don't fight-fight one lah - see other countries, is that what you want for your children? A people divided killing each other; for what? Democracy means that if you don't like the leader or if he's not performing to your expectations, don't vote for them. Hilang wang pentaruhan - gambling ke?

After all everyone loves to eat all the tasty dishes, the holidays and open houses that all the cultures of Malaysia has to offer. Admit it.
A lot of people I work with are envious that we have what we have in Malaysia.

Love this Google doodle.

Eid Mubarak

Eid Mubarak. Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri to all our friends and family wherever you are.

I envy the astronaut ... being out there and seeing the earth such a beautiful and fragile place and not seeing what ugliness lies within.

Ramadan has come and gone. A time to celebrate eid and a time to say goodbye to Ramadan. May Allah bless all of us with it again next year.

Salam to all, take care while driving - rest if you need to. Your destination will not go away. And may Allah cross our paths again. Insyallah.

foodies & goodies

aunty yan is here... yeay!!

we left the house at 6am to drive up to Manchester airport to meet the kids' aunty. the motorway was practically ours!

just when we got into the carpark at 7.45am, kamar received a text message from his sister - "out..all OK".  waahh that was quick! then another 1 hr 40 minutes drive back home and time to open the boxes and luggage. yang best nya, aunty yan punya barang dalam luggage was just 1 pasang baju raya. she left some clothes here from previous visits for daily wear.
kids were overwhelmed with all the prezzies & duit raya from our close friends and relatives. and mummy & daddy of cos lagi teruja with the foodies - rendang, lemang, all kinds of keropok, kerepek, bahulu, biskut raya (which will not survive to see hariraya); books (Teohlogy & Ombak Rindu) and dvd cerita melayu etc etc. thats not all. on 2nd day raya we're going down to londeng to kutip more foodies..memang boleh bukak kedai runcit.

this is just a small fraction of the foodie..
lemang, rendang, serunding, tempe..
and mummy dapat banyak tudung and 2 pasang baju raya - a batik jubah and sepasang baju kurung moden siap dengan bling2..seronok!! kesian daddy tak ada baju raya but he got a set of butang baju melayu from my best friend. pendekata raya sakan tahun ni...

thanks to my cousin for this package - baju kurung for little missy with matching baju melayu for her bff. atan's mom was so pleased ....seronok nya!

Alhamdulillah rezeki dibulan mulia.. thank you all for everything, from the bottom of our hearts..

naughty chart vs reward chart

this is little missy's lifeline.. the naughty chart has been there for months and so far she's gotten 3 X and had improved a lot. less tantrum and more obedient. this works better than putting her at the 'naughty corner'

3 days ago we went out to the shops, she saw the reward chart and asked me to get it. i sat down with her and we both agreed on the things that she's supposed to do to gain the stars. she scored full marks for the past 2 days, see how long this will last. to some people, some things on the list probably dont deserve a star but you just dont know how difficult it is sometimes to get her to finish  her meals. and for her to  mandi without any excuse like " i mandi already yesterday"  is another chore. and in order to get a star for the last bit "listen to mummy, daddy & kakak all day" is going to be quite a challenge for her. so far she's been good and asked if she could put the stars herself, and even cheekily said to me the other day "can you ask daddy to remove that naughty chart?"

all good things come to an end

and now.. the end is near.. so i must face the final curtain...

its the last few days in the month of Ramadhan. almost everyone asks the question - is this going to be our last Ramadhan? no one knows whether or not we're going to live to meet the next Ramadhan, so we try our best to do all the good deeds in this holy month. what i learned from this fasting ritual is "always be appreciative, be thankful and be patient". i cud never be like others who recite one juzuk of  Quran daily and solat tarawih every nite during this holy month to gain pahala; i did it my way - stayed at home most of the time - puasa mata, puasa mulut, puasa telinga;  socialise virtually on fb but be watchful of my comments & "conversation", looked after the kids & household, diligently and sincerely prepare food for iftar and sahur. buat amalan setakat yang mampu & secara ikhlas, biar tak dapat pahala banyak asal tak bertambah  dosa.

summer holidays is coming to an end too. next week i'm back to work and the kids will be back to school the week after. its not been a great summer, there have been exceptionally good days as well as bad days. temperature is slowly dropping to below 20 deg, more rain and shorter days are coming our way.  with summer slowly leaving us,  i had to sort out the next season's wear. i  just de-cluttered the kids clothings and my wardrobe, lots to dispose or ship home. summer wear will be put away, light knitted jumpers and cardies are back on the rail.

Insyaallah panjang umur kita jumpa lagi di Ramadhan & Summer tahun depan.

kuih bakar "aunt bessie's"

pagi tadi before he went to work, he asked if  he could have kuih bakar for iftar. so puan isteri obliged to make this simple kuih which took her  less than 15 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes in the oven. recipe can be found here http://weightwatchersnott.blogspot.com/2011/03/kuih-bakar-pandan.html
sorry lah  garing sikit but normally yg ter-garing lagi sedap..
ada tak rupa mcm yorkshire pudding Aunt Bessie's?

more foodie

on monday we had guests from kg langham for iftar. the easiest food to prepare but  sumptuous to eat would be steamboat. for kuih, i made some popia inti curry minced chicken & keledek goreng tepung cicah dengan sambal kicap jawa which ina made.

ini yang di panggil makanan penuh meja..maybe we should get a bigger table. tunggu lah next year kut.

the kids had to eat at the small table..

and yesterday dah malas nak pikir lauk iftar, i cooked ikan 3 rasa accompanied by seafood soup leftover steamboat from the nite before and homegrown rocket salad dari kg langham, cicah budu & sambal belacan and encik suami requested for bubur pulut hitam for pencuci mulut.

menu hari ini : char kuey teow & kuih bakar "aunt bessie's yorkshire pudding"

poket terbakar

this afternoon i took the girls out  back to school shopping for big missy.  last week we've completed little missy's attire and their shoes..this really did burn a hole in our wallets. i think we've spent close to £100 per child  and  that  doesnt include text books, exercise books or school fees which we dont have to buy/pay for.
cant imagine if the kids in msia start new term a week after raya  like we do here, mau pengsan parents! nasib baik lah we dont spend much  for raya except buying ingredients to cook for raya all day dining. but then again, rezeki anak2 will come in many ways..

terbaik!!

hari ni dah 21 hari berpuasa tapi rasa macam dah nak raya, gara2 makan  satay for iftar tonite. encik suami marinated the chicken & beef yesterday and today both of us cucuk the satay at around 5pm. i made the kuah kacang and boiled the nasi himpit in the afternoon. at 7.30pm baru start nyalakan api in the bbq drum and everything's ready just in time for berbuka.

Walkers Semperit

the past 2-3 days i was in the mood to make kuih raya and i tried my hand at making kuih semperit. first time buat, tak berapa jadi macam the ones that i used to eat so yesterday  i modified it a bit and got what i wanted & the way i remember it.

bila dah letak dalam my collection of biscuit tins, look commercialised macam beli kat kedai pulak and rebranded  " Walkers Kuih Semperit" (ganti shortbread), made in Wollaton (instead of Scotland).

ramai orang berkenan dengan biscuit tins tu. haaa ini lah guna nya biscuit tins yang di collect selama hari ni. come hariraya, i will just serve the biscuits in the tin; ye lah i dont have the fancy balang biscuits macam orang2 kat malaya. tu pun kalau biscuit tak habis sebelum raya.

lama-lama

time : 10.30am

little missy : mummy, i want to change into a (day) dress (she was still in her night dress)
mummy: okay, but you have to brush your teeth first
little missy : i will brush all by myself
mummy : ok, but you have to brush for a long time
little missy : yes i will, lama-lama..

ok lah kan..her malay has improved.and she never failed to tell me that dia dah baca Bismillah before makan. and dah boleh sebut Assalamualaikum & Alhamdulillah quite fluently tapi bunyi macam muallaf sikit. tak pe lah, slowly but surely.

light & easy

this is a belated entry.

early last week, we feted kamar's niece Raudhah with steamboat dinner before she returned to Sheffield on wednesday, after staying with us for 4 days.

steamboat is one of those meal that requires very minimal cooking. all one needs to do is to cook the soup/broth.  keep the soup (we prefer vege soup) warm in the steamboat pot and throw in seafood & chicken strips & leafy vegetables. we bought different kinds of frozen seafood & vege tofu in the asian shop. little missy enjoyed it cos she got to use chopsticks and getting good at it too.

all time favourite

whenever i run out of idea what to cook, be it for dinner or iftar, i just have to name one dish and everyone would just say Yes! yup..the ever so easy & yummy chicken rice with ayam jeruk, sup ayam/sayur, salad, chilli & kicap.  last nite i tried using Nasi Ayam Hainan paste which my uncle & aunty brought from malayaland in april.  the Ayam Jeruk now becomes my 'signature dish' which i learned from encik suami & my sis in law. see  http://weightwatchersnott.blogspot.com/2011/06/nasi-ayam.html for recipe.

i took the girls out to the city yesterday, big missy wanted to watch Smurf with her best friend and while waiting for them, i went to the shops with little missy. we got home at around 5.30pm and i was a bit tired to make any kueh, so the easiest bet - pisang goreng ala cik anyah (my late greatgrandma), basically goreng pisang then sprinkle a bit of sugar. and  i re-fried the leftover cucur udang ala pak zainal.

girl : i mandi already yesterday, i will mandi tonite  (thats a familiar statement in this household by the way)
mummy : that was yesterday, you have to mandi today. and then i will mandi after you
girl : nope ..you have to mandi first and thats FINAL!

she got her way ..

cucur zaman sekolah

dah lama encik suami nak makan cucur udang 'spongy', just like the ones he used to buy from the pakcik during his boarding school days. untuk menyahut seruan encik suami, puan isteri finally found a recipe and tried for tonight's iftar; first time ever in her entire life. see http://weightwatchersnott.blogspot.com/2011/08/cucur-udang-ala-pak-zainal.html

bila dah masak, i posted the photo and tagged my youngest uncle cik aman who was kamar's one year senior at school  (and also the 'point of reference'  masa mula2 courting dulu). my uncle commented "ada rupa macam Pakcik Zainal duk jual".. kira ok lah tu..and kamar gave seal of approval.

i cut a few into small pieces and mixed with green beans, lettuce and cucumber, makan dengan kuah rojak and had with ayam percik which mimi gave last nite and sup tulang/kambing for tonite's iftar.

Hola..como estas

mummy hanged her apron last nite, birthday girl & her best friend became our young chefs for  the night. the girls wanted to eat Quesadillas and mummy & daddy wanted Enchilladas, so they ended up making both dishes. well.. you've got to start 'em young! Thanks girls for the lovely meal..

she's 12

our first born was 12 yesterday, how time flies.. kalau kat malaya dah boleh bawak pergi Jabatan Pendaftaran buat Mykad.

she woke up early yesterday morning and asked if she could open  her presents. i told my self & her daddy that we were not going to spend much on  presents and it would be better to give her some cash for her to save up towards her school Paris trip next year but then again, her birthday comes only once a year and  we dont buy her things all the time, not even a reward for doing well at school cos she is supposed to get good grades anyway, no two ways about it.

she got  few presents this year. last sunday daddy bought her a pair of colourful babycham trainers and i bought some clothes from dorothy perkins (yes, we wear the same shoe size and go to the same clothes shop). then i got her some smelly stuff from perfume shop and mimi also gave her a bottle of perfume. ye lah, bak kata mimi, dah 12 y.o takkan lah nak bagi Hello Kitty stuff pulak...her bff Lauren came early yesterday morning with  few presents - pair of horsey ear studs, a bottle of perfume, strawberry shortcakes. and yesterday afternoon, the postman delivered a school bag that i ordered online & presents from her aunty Gill, our family friend -  a nice horsey card &  a cheque.

she requested for icecream cone cakes on her birthday, just like the ones she saw in one of my recipe magazines

.
her birthday falls during summer holidays and for few years during Ramadhan so we plan to have another celebration with her close friends after Raya.

we wish nothing but the best for you and no matter how old you are, you will always be our baby. we loved you then, we love you now and we will always love you, unconditionally..

get a life!

i may get shot for writing this post but what the heck..i'm just voicing out my opinion.

its been more than a week since the stupid riots in Londeng and other cities, the like of Birm, Liverfool, Bristol, Manchester and of course tidak ketinggalan Notts. i was completely disgusted by the cowardly acts by the yobbos. figures are out on bbc news online today in article "what happened to the rioters in court". more than 2700 people have been arrested, 1291 charged and 1179 appeared in court. bila baca newspapers or online news, most of the yobs were the pak & mak tams tapi ada jugak mat & minah saleh tapi tak ramai. and bukan nya semua yang kena tangkap tu are jobless, ada jugak uni student, teacher assistant (one of the first yang kena charge), yang baru  dapat kerja & about to start work, anak orang berada. never mind those yang memang biul and tak sekolah/kerja, memang dah tak ada otak nak pikir panjang. yang mana ada kerja & educated tu, what were they thinking? most of them said they never thought they would get caught. weyy,, ni dah zaman teknologi with cctv everywhere in the big citites,  bukan nya zaman tok kadok or in  the remote villages in the hebrides.

most tax payers like me agree with the city councils decision to evict the 'criminals'  from their council house/flats and that includes their parents (if they still live with their parents).  kita bayar council tax punya lah banyak, nak tanggung these culprits pulak.  some parents disagree, saying that they are not responsible for their children's behaviour. wah, kalau anak2 buat jahat, dan2 tu tak responsible for the kids tapi bila anak2 excel in something, terus nak claim/share glory. come on lah, we parents are responsible for our kids - good or bad. the PM came out with another statement today - children without fathers is one of the nation's problems. tu lah, condone sangat single teenage parents who sometimes dont even know who father their kids, siap bagi flat/rumah, child benefit etc. and some of these teenager moms, dapat jer benefit terus pergi  beli booze, bukan nya nak feed/clothe the children. anak2 pulak perangai lebih kurang sama dengan mak dia orang. these youngsters are just wasting their lives. pergi sekolah pun bukan nya kena bayar fees, bukan nya kena beli buku teks etc. nak beli uniform sekolah boleh guna child benefit. they are just plain lazy, no qualification, no skill.. elok jugak council buat regulation that the parents are penalised if their  children dont attend school.

and pasal that budak melayu yang kena thugged and mugged tu, i still stick to the same opinion that i wrote on my friends fb wall.  i symphatised with him (ye lah, he's still someone's son kan?) and i know he must be a smart (pandai) boy, otherwise he wouldnt be doing the course..; but he's not smart enough NOT to get out of  his house and cycle pass the affected areas.  tau lah nak gi berbuka puasa, tapi takkan lah tak baca/dengar news lansung. takkan nak tunggu high commission or the government keluarkan circular not to leave the house or travel unless absolutely necessary. if i say budak2  sekarang tak street smart or tak cukup pikiran or totally oblivious or ignorant, i would get slurred.  memang lah pandai, kalau tak takkan lah  ramai budak sekolah dapat berpuluh2 A in the SPM or ramai uni students dapat first class degree tapi ramai yang pandai  setakat on paper without using their brains.  and i read what one msian blogger who resides in londeng wrote on his blog that this boy yg jadi victim of circumstances dapat VIP treatment - tengok badminton kat vip area, jumpa Chong Wei, jumpa londeng mayor, got the media attention which has gone overboard. ye lah berpada-pada lah kan. orang lain pun ramai jugak jadi victim tapi tak de lah media coverage yang gila2. bukan nya jealous, apa faedah nya kalau i jealous pun??. he got thugged and mugged because he happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time .. think about the hundreds of people who lost their  properties and businesses and some lives lost.

this riot is actually an eye opener to everyone - the govt, the tax payers, the public, the yobbos. they've been taking things for granted too much. there's no quick fix to this problem and shouldnt be politicised. apa2 pun, hopefully something good will come out from the bad.

simply the best

rumah siapa la goreng ikan masin sampai bau satu kampong ni??

after 15 days of Ramadhan, i guess tonite's iftar dishes must be the best of what we had thus far. nothing else beats the simplest dishes of all times.

clockwise : ikan kering kurau goreng  + cili + bawang + perah limau, sup sayor, pisang goreng, ikan (sea bream) goreng garam kunyit.

sampai sekarang pun tangan masih berbau ikan masin..

moon & stars

no matter where we are, we are looking at the same moon

sunny june

last nite we had guests for iftar - the newly weds Sani (sunny) & his wife June and of course mimi & family. sani & june got married about a month ago and just got back last week from homeland, tak sempat nak honeymoon pun lagi. Sani & i are colleagues and everybody else in the department are looking forward to finally meet sani's wife, maybe after raya we will go out for a meal & 'meet & greet' the pengantin baru

the menu was  nasi biryani 'pritt stick' kambing (orang guna "pritt stick" sekarang, dah tak guna 'gam' lagi..get it??), lauk dal-carca merba  with mix of vegetables that i could get hold of  - aubergines, okra, dwarf beans, pineapples, carrots, potatoes and dhall, ayam masak merah madu - i cheated (again!) & used Brahim's Ayam Madu and added tomato sauce and sweet chilli sauce, salad and sambal belacan with Air Sirap Bandung. mimi made pengat pisang + keledek for dessert and i prepared rojak buah.

seronok tengok dia orang semua makan banyak..lauk pun just nice, siap tapau-ed for them as well.

shopping raya?

while most people in malaya land are busy Raya Shopping, we've been busy shopping too - Back To School shopping, Back to Work shopping, Wedding Gift shopping, Birthday Party & Present shopping and Grocery shopping. its been months  since ALL of us went out shopping together (jangan kira grocery shopping laaa). our kenit learned something new today - "buy what we need, not what we want"; she understood it perfectly that she decided NOT to buy a pair of 'pretty shoes'. i guess my tactical questions worked on her.

the family shoe store  - for work & school
someone's got a new pair of trainers from Sole Traders, birthday present from daddy.
sedap nya adik makan doughnuts, while waiting for kakak who's gone into Sole Traders with daddy.
shopping done and they waited in the car while mummy went to more shops..
yang mana kasut mummy, yang mana kasut big missy? we wear the same size now.
desperately in need of  a new medium sized frying pan..

ramai parents pergi shopping for Back To School stuff - shoes, uniforms and stationaries..nasib baik we were not mistaken for grandies looking for cucu's uniforms!
