isnt it ironic??

last nite i got home from work at 7pm and saw the beautiful moon hidden behind the clouds..

and my cousin ilani took this pic at 4.30am (msian time) = 6.30pm UK time  from her bedroom window.

isnt it ironic??? we were looking at the same moon at around the same time from different parts of the world..

and kak nik (as she's known to all of us) wrote this comment on my pic.

Cause we all live under the same Sun
We all walk under the same Moon
Then why, why can't we live as one..

(lyrics from Scorpion's Under The Same Sun)
.
waah dalam diam2, rocker jugak sepupu ku ini..

Dejavu

It may seem that the scheduler has put in the wrong timing or is trying to create a sense of dejavu in the viewers' minds.
Well the clocks are due to be set back an hour - Back to GMT and therefore we will go home from work in the dark. At least we get an extra hour of sleep until next year in spring when it gets taken away again.

P.S. If you can't see it, the schedule reads:
1:00       1:30      1:00

juadah hari raya haji

while mostly semua orang sibok dengan nak balik kampong, kurban, juadah raya haji, its just another friday for us. kamar & i were working. nak buat macamana kan. lagipun its more important to understand the true meaning of eid-ul-adha to appreciate "the sacrifice". the makan2 part tu sampingan aja.

nasib baik my first class was at 11am, so sempat lah buat kuah kacang untuk makan dengan nasi himpit. thanks to whoever (dah lupa siapa) yang bagi kuah kacang mix masa balik baru ni. all i had to do was add water and jerang atas dapor for 1/2 hour sampai kacang masak. kamar cakap sedap kuah kacang tu. ketupat nona rebus the night before. both of us bawak nasi himpit & kuah kacang for packed lunch.

4pm - class finished, singgah tesco to buy some ingredients for dinner
5.30pm - got home
6pm - masuk dapor
7.15pm - had dinner and  big missy helped with the dishes
8pm - kitchen is cleaned and time to watch Adam & Hawa (thursday nite's episode) and put our feet up.

our raya haji dinner - biryani ayam, dalca, acar timun & nenas
 condiment - courtesy of Patak's & Tesco.
dessert - Waitrose seriously sticky toffee sponge pudding, makan dengan cornish custard..best!

mid term break

kids mid term break ended today. we had to ask a big favour from kamar's niece, Raudhah who's in the final stage of writing her phd thesis to come over and look after the kids. Raudhah has always been good with them and they listen to whatever she said. yang best nya, after Raudhah sampai 1 jam, dah ambik Quran & buku iqra' nak ngaji. kalau dengan kita, hampeh!

i did a timetable for lil missy and Alhamdulillah she followed it through without much excuse. after 3 days with her cousin, lil missy was able to recite Alfatihah.. Alhamdulillah, we are so pleased with her achievement. memang lah tak boleh nak compare dengan anak orang lain her age or younger, yang dah pandai baca macam2. kita buat setakat mana yang mampu. ni pun dah seribu rahmat. now that Raudhah has gone back to Sheffield, its down to me to teach her some other surah lazim, starting with 3 Qul.

i told her to baca Alfatihah every nite before she goes to sleep so that she wont forget. and she said to me "mummy, i have to read it so that bad things dont happen".

at the end of the first day, she complained "mummy, i got all muddled up (confused)". ye lah, semua nak kena buat - reading, maths, alif ba ta & ngaji, one after the other. Raudhah was so skillful teaching (and pujuk) her how to do addition/subtraction using big numbers. bless her!
not bad lah kan for someone yg baru belajar

on tuesday they took the bus into town and had lunch with me. and lil missy asked if she could have a new outfit for snowy bear. dia tuntut the promise i made end of september. and for her achievement, i couldnt say no. her kakak said "you deserve a reward if you do as you are told".
Thanks Raudhah for helping us out and teaching the kids..

Eid-ul-Adha & Sacrifice/Qurban

this post is to remind myself & for my kids to know the reasons why we celebrate Eid-ul-adha (or hariraya haji); the festival of sacrifice (qurban) which is strongly related to sembelih and what is  "sembelih/slaughter" the islamic way.

The festival, observed on 10th day of Zulhijjah, remembers the Prophet Ibrahim A.S's willingness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to. God appeared in a dream to Ibrahim and told him to sacrifice his son Isma'il. Ibrahim and Isma'il set off to Mina for the sacrifice. As they went, the devil attempted to persuade Ibrahim to disobey God and not to sacrifice his beloved son. But Ibrahim stayed true to God, and drove the devil away. As Ibrahim prepared to kill his son God stopped him and gave him a sheep to sacrifice instead.
Ibrahim's complete obedience to the will of God is celebrated by Muslims each year.
Each Muslim, as they celebrate, reminds themselves of their own submission to God, and their own willingness to sacrifice anything to God's wishes. During the festival Muslims who can afford to, sacrifice domestic animals, usually sheep, as a symbol of Ibraham's sacrifice. (British law insists that the animals must be killed in a proper slaughterhouse.) The meat is distributed among family, friends and the poor, who each get a third share. (from bbc religion website)

the festival also marks the end of Hajj Pilgrimage in Mekah, hence why its called Hari Raya Haji. the norm is to puasa sunat hari wukuf di Arafah on 9th Zulhijjah, the eve of Eid-ul-Adha.

these are some pics which i hijacked from nasrul, kamar's nephew fb wall. not sure where the place was but its at his friend's kampong. these are typical scenes in on eid-ul-adha mornings. dulu2 masa kat msia, selalunya kami balik raya haji & qurban di kelantan.

doa dibaca sebelum disembelih.
alhamdulillah, selesai..
proses melapah..
  proses pembahagian/distribution

those who dont know the reasons behind the muslim sembelih method find it disturbing/torturing the animals. and for that, its important that my kids know why its done that way.

The Islamic method of slaughtering animals, known as Zabiha has been the object of much criticism from a large number of people. One may consider the following points, which prove that the Zabiha method is not only humane but also scientifically the best: (thanks to my friend mazlina for sharing this on fb)

1. Islamic method of slaughtering animal

Zakkaytum is a verb derived from the root word Zakaah (to purify). Its infinitive is Tazkiyah which means purification. The Islamic mode of slaughtering an animal requires the following conditions to be met:

a. Animal should be slaughtered with a sharp object (knife)
The animal has to be slaughtered with a sharp object (knife) and in a fast way so that the pain of slaughter is minimised.

b. Cut wind pipe, throat and vessels of neck
Zabiha is an Arabic word which means ‘slaughtered’. The ‘slaughtering’ is to be done by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord.

c. Blood should be drained
The blood has to be drained completely before the head is removed. The purpose is to drain out most of the blood which would serve as a good culture medium for micro-organisms. The spinal cord must not be cut because the nerve fibres to the heart could be damaged during the process causing cardiac arrest, stagnating the blood in the blood vessels.
2. Blood is a good medium for germs and bacteria
Blood is a good media of germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. Therefore the Muslim way of slaughtering is more hygienic as most of the blood containing germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. that are the cause of several diseases is eliminated.

3. Meat remains fresh for a longer time
Meat slaughtered by Islamic way remains fresh for a longer time due to deficiency of blood in the meat as compared to other methods of slaughtering.

4. Animal does not feel pain
The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerve of the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. While dying, the animal struggles, writhes, shakes and kicks, not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in blood and due to the flow of blood out of the body.

mastering the skills

its been 18 years since his last one and yet he still has the skill in dressing up his 6 days old baby boy Nik Ariq Yasin. caya lah bro!!

my kiddos said the baby is cute..and lil missy asked "is the baby cuter than me when i was a baby??" and mummy kan brutal and answered "of course baby is cuter!!"
sememangnya anak2 saya diajar menerima kenyataan dari kecil lagi ...

i asked for a pic of Nik Ariq with his eyes opened, nak tengok mata kaler apa - hijau, biru, cokelat, grey or hitam ? maklum lah mata we alls ni kan kaler dark brown sejak azali, tak yah pakai contact lens kaler2 ya u olls!!

i was down with sore throat, cough, wheezing, fever, body & head ache (complete package) on friday night after work. pagi tadi dah ok sikit, managed to get down to the kitchen to cook lunch - mihun goreng & kuay tiaw. it took me 30 years to master the skill of menggoreng mihun.. thanks to my friend eva who taught me how to get the right mihun texture so that tak keras or too soggy/hancur bila goreng.

we've been shnooked!!

lil missy asked for a shnook yesterday when we went to tesco. cannot wait until xmas dah!!
