bila nak snow?

hari ni dah start sejuk, especially in the evening, tunggu bus 10 minit in 5 deg C at 7pm is not nice. tadi at around 3.30pm hujan selebat hendak. temperature is slowly dropping to 0 deg at nite time towards the weekend. kalau sejuk, biar tentu turun snow kan? ni tak.. hujan pulak yang menjadi jadi.

this time last year, snow dah turun and lasted till january. pics below were taken exactly a year ago yesterday and we joined the others walking in Wollaton Park on freezing yet sunny Sunday afternoon.

its not all about the money

i went to Leeds this morning to visit a placement student, the first of 4 under my supervision. the other 2 are in Leicester and 1 in Cambridge which i plan to visit in January. glad i dont have any student in London, just hate travelling to and across the big met city. i left home at 7.15am, its still dark (sun rises at 7.50am) and the little one asked "mummy, why do you have to go to work at nite?" what she doesnt know is mummy used to go out to work when its still dark and got back home at nite time, for 10 years before we moved here.

anyway, pegi Leeds adalah boring sebenarnya. its just another city, sama jer dengan other cities in hengland. train journey was 2 hours each way, sempat marking coursework budak2 first year dalam train. the actual meeting with the student & his supervisor only took me 40 minutes. habis je meeting, headed off to train station, had brunch at Mc D and took the 12 noon train back to notts so that i get home in time to pick the little one from school. tak sempat pun nak tengok apa ada kat bandar Leeds tu walhal city centre is just 5 minutes walk behind the train station (pic below)

Leeds Waterfront - lots of new offices and apartments, opposite the train station.
the student told me that he doesnt get paid by the company but was paid by his father (who's a friend of the director) to work at that organisation. he's doing it to gain experience and said that he learned a lot so far and enjoying it. good for him!

Chillies = fruits or vege or flowers?

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

i read an article online the other day - the debate whether a tomato is a fruit or vegetable? this is what oxford dictionaries got to say :-

The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example.

As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits, such as tomatoes or bean pods, may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example.

So, the answer to the question is that a tomato is technically the fruit of the tomato plant, but it's used as a vegetable in cooking.

so what makes a fruit, a fruit or a vegetable, a vegetable? simple question - does it have seeds? if it does, then technically (or botanically) its a fruit..so that makes  tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, beans, walnuts all FRUITS.

what about Chillies? if you use the above argument, then they should also be Fruits lah kan??

but not in the case of  Red Chillies yang terselit in the bouquet of  Heliconia and Red Ginger Flowers that i got last weekend; bought from the quaint Wissendine village. technically, in my case, Chillies are Flowers..

so kaedahnya (bak kata my biras, Corlyn), kalau kehabisan cili, boleh lah petik dalam vase..

wish list 1433

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

(from Walt Disney's 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio)

i've got a long wish list for year 2012 and i need a lot of luck really badly.  its so timely with Awal Muharram 1433 Hijrah. thanks to my uncle Pak Su War for the reminder.

dalam wish list tu bukan nya nak mintak duit banyak untuk beli rumah/kereta besar or designer handbags/shoes. everything is for the family - us & the kids. for now i will just keep them safe in my head dan yang mampu di buat hanyalah meminta du'a dari Allah swt, Insyaallah dimakbulkan.

My First Book

little missy brought this home today. mula2 tu ada few mis-spelt words which i asked her to correct with help from big sister. and she scolded me for saying that she spelt 'pond' wrongly (on page 3). well, i thought she meant 'puddle'. and she went on & on about it that i had to say sorry several times.

i think she did pretty well, for a little girl who's not even 5 y.o. and just started school 2 months ago..

she's quite imaginative and creative..and to me, thats more important than being able to read well but not understanding what she's reading/writing.
