i had a good laugh the day before the engagement when i called my aunty's house. a female voice answered the phone on the other side and the conversation went like this :-me: "assalamualaikum.. sapa tu?" (so brutal !! i konpius; couldnt figure out suara sapa sebab all the 4 girls sound alike)
the female : politely in kelantanese dialect - "nak cakap dengan siapa?"
me: "ni rumah nik maimoon ke?" (i thot i dialled the wrong number..)
the female : politely - "ya, ni rumah nik moon.." (in exact words - "hae, ni rumah nik moon". 'hae' is the polite way to say 'yes' in the clan.)
me: "ni kawthar ke?" (by this time, i've recognised whose voice it was..)
the female : "ya, kawthar ni." (she still couldnt figure out who i was)
me: "ha!ha!ha! beralusnya...." (beralus = lemah lembut)
the female : the moment she heard me laughing, she just burst out laughing .... "mesti lah beralus, cucu nik sah kan??" (our maternal grandma is well known for her soft spoken & politeness, the true Nik)
then the conversation continued with the normal hype & laughters all the way....
apparently ramai jugak jemputan...perwakilan from Melaka datang sampai 9 kereta, campur anak beranak, adik beradik, sanak saudara ada lah over 100 guests.. Congrats kawthar & hafiz.. looks like we are going to miss the wedding next year as well.
teringat pulak my engagement to kamar which was dead simple. infact i wouldnt even call it an engagement but 'ikat tanda' which was attended by mom's siblings, my grandma's sister, my arwah grandpa, my sister & family and kamar's family was represented by kakak & her friend aziah, abang yeb and kak wan & arwah tok yah (kak wan's mom) with only 3 dulang of gifts from each side. it was our wish to keep it simple and everyone agreed to it.
